It was a triumphant return to the Wessex stadium for ex-Wildcat star Lee Smart in an incident filled evening that opened the new season for Weymouth. Lee who now rides in the Premier League for the Birmingham Brummies racked up six wins and was only really troubled by Barry Burchett who led him for the first lap in heat 16 and Mark Baseby who chased Smart hard before falling on the last lap of heat 8.

The Rye House boys packed in behind Smart with Daniel Halsey taking the second spot and Lee Strudwick following him home for third, they all go forward to the grand final at Lakeside on Friday April 25 with Gareth Isherwood taking one of the reserve places.

It was a nightmare of a night for Mark Baseby who last year dropped only two points in the under 21 round at Weymouth claiming third, 12 months on and he fell in his first three rides before withdrawing from the meeting.

After three heats Smart had already pulled clear of the rest but it was very tight for the remaining places with Halsey and Bates both on seven points and Lee Strudwick Kyle Newman, Barry Burchatt and Gareth Isherwood right behind them on six points. Bates challenge was about to come off the rails though as he trailed home last in his fourth and then hit the fence in his last ride.

Weymouth Wildcat young gun Kyle Newman who 12 months ago had only just swung his leg over a speedway bike for the first time put up a very impressive performance. After a fall in his first ride he quickly got into his stride with a hat-trick of wins and a second in heat 20 when he came up against Smart. In the last chance qualifier second behind Burchatt impatience got the better of him and he dived hard under the Crusader causing him to hit the fence and the exclusion of Newman ended his hopes of reaching the final.
