The Wildcats had a real uphill battle
on their hands if they were to recover
from the previous nights hammering at
the St Boniface Arena. With a much revised
line up for 2008 and missing the injured
Kyle Newman, the lack of track time
for the Wildcats was obvious when compared
to the Devils line up that has remained
mostly unchanged from 2007.
Rain earlier in the day had left the
track fairly wet and on a cold misty
night the hardy supporters witnessed
the Devils quickly establish a lead
that they were never to relinquish,
wining by ten points on the night to
claim the Devon and Dorset Cup with
an aggregate score of 110 – 68.
The Wildcats did show moments of promise:
Jon Armstrong got dialled into the track
quickly and was looking very quick,
after a second place in his first outing
he secured three heat wins but an unfortunate
fall in heat 13 when on a tactical ride
left him out of contention at the back
after remounting. Luke Priest had a
super quick first ride recording the
fastest time of the night, beating Tom
Brown in the process. After joint top
scoring for the Wildcats the previous
night Tim Webster pulled off a breath
taking ride in heat seven with team
mate Herne to record the Wildcats first
5-1 of the evening.
Tom Brown was unable to repeat his maximum
from the first leg scoring just six
points although Stephens and Glanz were
both looking on top form for the Devils.
But it was the second string and reserve
riders where the difference between
the two teams was obvious; Kyle Hughes
after a slow start recorded two heat
wins, with Hopwood and Pickard picking
up one a piece.
The unexpected magnitude of this Devils
victory has demonstrated that they are
going to take some stopping this year
but there is certainly much more to
come from the Wildcats once the team
gels and the winter cobwebs are blown
away.
