Error Costs Herne - 29/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' Jay Herne
came agonisingly close to capturing
the Conference League Riders' Champion-ship
but had to settle for fifth place. Redcar's
Benji Compton took the honours at Rye
House after scoring 14 points from his
five rides while Byron Bekker of Scunthorpe
came second with 13. Herne, Dan Halsey
(Rye House) and Darcy Ward (Boston)
all scored 12 so there was a run-off
for third-place, which Ward won followed
by Halsey. Kyle Newman, Weymouth's second
representative, failed to score in what
will have been a useful experience for
the 16-year-old.

Premier Push For Cats - 27/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats promoter Phil
Bartlett will continue his push to
bring Premier League speedway to the
Wessex Stadium when he attends a
high-profile meeting at BSPA
headquarters in Rugby next month.
Bartlett's men will take on the
Plymouth Devils in a two legged
Conference League play-off semi
final on October 10 and 11, and
hopes are high that the club can win
through and finally realise their
dream of lifting the title. Not only
would promotion bring more
high-profile meetings to the town
but it would also give the club a
much-needed boost in revenue.

Webster Vital Time To Impress - 27/09/088 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats chairman Phil
Bartlett has insisted that Tim Webster
is still in his thoughts ahead of next
month's Conference League play-off semi-final
against the Plymouth Devils. The reserve,
who has spent the past seven weeks sidelined
with a broken ankle, only registered
one point on his return to action last
night but with the double header against
the Devon outfit still a fortnight away
there is still time for him to make
an impression.

Webster Returns To Guest For Falcons
- 26/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Tim Webster will return to the saddle
tonight at the Wessex Stadium for the
first time since breaking his ankle
on August 2. But he will not be turning
out for the Weymouth Doonan Wildcats.
Instead he will ride at number four
for the Exeter Falcons as they bid to
turn over the Conference League high-fliers
in what promises to be an enthralling
Challenge Meeting (7.15pm).

Cats Face Falcons- 24/09/08 |
|
by
Julie Martin - Weymouth Wildcats Speedway
The Weymouth Doonan Wildcats welcome
the Exeter Falcons to the Wessex Stadium
this Friday evening for the Falcons
first meeting since their planning application
was approved by Teignbridge District
Council for a state of the art track
to be built at Haldon racecourse. It’s
been three years since the closure of
the former track at Exeter’s County
Ground and although there have been
many obstacles to overcome, the Falcons
current promoter – Allen Trump is delighted
that the future now looks bright for
the Devon club.

Cats Crush Cheetahs - 22/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' team manager
Jem Dicken praised an all-round performance
from his riders in Saturday night's
61-32 Challenge meeting defeat of the
Oxford Cheetahs. The Wildcats were back
on home turf after three away meetings
in as many days. And following three
successive defeats, the worst of which
being a 64-28 loss at Boston, Dicken
was pleased to see his side get back
on track with the Conference League
play-offs little under three weeks away.

|
Redemption Time - 20/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' team manager
Jem Dicken believes tonight's Challenge
meeting at the Wessex Stadium against
the Oxford Cheetahs (7.15pm) will be
a chance for his riders to "redeem themselves".
Despite being able to celebrate a secured
place in the end of season Conference
League play-offs, the Wildcats suffered
three away defeats in as many days last
weekend. And Dicken was not a happy
man, especially after Monday night's
64-28 humiliation at the Boston Barracudas,
which he labelled as "abysmal".

Cats Have Date With The Devils - 18/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats have been drawn
against nearest rivals the Plymouth
Devils in the semi-finals of the Conference
League play-offs. The league season
is yet to be complete but the make-up
of the top four has already been determined
with Boston and Redcar claiming the
other two spots. The first leg of the
semi-final will take place in Plymouth
on Friday, October 11 with the return
at the Wessex Stadium a day later. The
victor will then go on to race against
the winner of the Boston versus Redcar
clash for the right to be crowned Conference
League champions.

Cats Wonder What Went Wrong - 17/09/08 |
|
by
Julie Martin - Weymouth Wildcats Speedway
The Weymouth Doonan’s Wildcats must
be wondering where it all went so wrong
after a disastrous weekend of action
in which they failed to gain a single
point from three meetings on the road.
The Dorset side set off on their northern
tour with high hopes of scaling the
summit of the Conference League table
by the end of the weekend. The first
meeting was scheduled for Friday but
the Great British weather intervened
with rain putting paid to the meeting
at Boston which was then hastily rearranged
for Monday.

Cats Suffer A Barracuda Bashing - 16/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' team manager
Jem Dicken was left baffled by his side's
"abysmal" display in last night's 64-28
hammering at the Boston Barracudas.
The Wildcats, who were beaten by the
Redcar Cubs on Saturday and the Buxton
Hitmen on Sunday, suffered their third
away loss in as many days as they were
simply out-raced by their hosts. Only
Lee Smart (11+1) scored double figures
on a miserable night for the Radipole
Lane outfit.

Cats’ Eyes On Barracudas - 15/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Despite being assured a place in the
end of season Conference League play-offs,
the Weymouth Doonan Wildcats will look
to avoid a third away defeat in as many
days when they take on the Boston Barracudas
tonight. The meeting was originally
scheduled for Friday night as part of
a triple-header for the Wildcats, but
wet weather prevented the contest going
ahead. Weymouth then lost 53-37 at the
Redcar Cubs on Saturday before suffering
a narrow 46-44 defeat at the Buxton
Hitmen yesterday.

Garrity Impresses Bartlett As Owen Takes
Wessex Crown - 15/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Marc Owen claimed top spot in the third
round of the British Under-15 Championship
held at the Wessex Stadium. Eleven points
were enough to see Owen come out victorious
while Joe Jacobs (10) and Jason Garrity
(9) finished second and third respectively.
But it was the latter who caught the
eye of Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' chairmen
Phil Bartlett.

Cubs The Target For Hungry Cats - 13/09/08 |
|
by
Nigel Dean - Dorset Echo
Weymouth will be looking to cement their
Conference League play-off place today
when they take on Redcar Cubs (3pm).
The Wildcats were due to face Boston
Barracudas last night in the first of
a triple-header this weekend, but that
meeting was rained off much to the disappointment
of team manager Jem Dicken.

Bartlett To Eye Future Talent At Under-15
Meet - 13/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Speedway stars of the future will take
to the Wessex Stadium circuit tonight
for the third round of the British Under-15
Championship (7.15pm). Current Weymouth
Wildcat Brendan Johnson finished third
in last year's contest but is too old
to compete while 2007 runner-up James
Sarjeant will be looking to go one better
this time around. But he will have to
fend off the challenge of Marc Owen,
who Wildcats' chairman Phil Bartlett
believes could be this year's leading
light.

Wildcats Travel North For Treble Challenge
- 12/09/08 |
|
by
Ky Capel - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats face a Conference
League triple-header this weekend, starting
with tonight's trip to the Boston Barracudas
(7.15pm). The Wildcats' spot in the
end of season play-offs is all but certain
and chairman Phil Bartlett, whose side
also face the Redcar Cubs tomorrow and
then the Buxton Hitmen on Sunday, is
confident of gaining at least one victory
over the course of the three away meetings.

Cats On A High - 10/09/08
|
|
by
Paul Burbidge - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Wildcats' star Lee Smart is
impressed with the progress made by
his team-mates since he left Radipole
Lane 12 months ago. The 20-year-old
made his return to Dorset on Saturday,
after having an up-and-down season with
Birmingham and then Mildenhall in the
Premier League. He notched nine paid
one, as the Wildcats lost out 48-45
in an Inter-League Challenge match against
the Isle of Wight. The visitors from
a league above needed a tactical ride
and a last-heat decider to see off their
Conference League opposition.

Tough On Cats - 10/09/08 |
|
by
Julie Martin - Weymouth Wildcats Speedway
The Weymouth Doonan Wildcats proved
to be tough opposition for Premier League
side - Wightlink Islanders on Saturday
at Radipole Lane, only finally conceding
defeat in a last heat decider. The Islanders
were forced to use the black and white
helmet cover in heat 10, which was won
in fine style by Cory ‘Concrete for
Breakfast’ Gathercole, who made an impressive
return from injury and remained unbeaten
by an opponent on the night.

Premier Stars Pip Impressive Cats -
08/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats' team manager
Jem Dicken reckons the only way his
side will fail in their quest to win
the Conference League title is if they
"throw it away" themselves. The Wildcats
gave an Isle of Wight Select side, including
five Premier League stars, a run for
their money at the Wessex Stadium on
Saturday night in a cracking evening
of speedway that saw them just lose
out in a last-heat decider. The final
score was 48-45 in the Islanders' favour
with Jason Bunyan scoring a 15-point
maximum and breaking Lewis Bridger's
track record in heat 13 with a time
of 51.3.

Smart Move - 06/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers & Julie Martin - Dorset
Echo
Lee Smart will make his return to the
Wessex Stadium tonight when the Weymouth
Wildcats take on the Isle of Wight Islanders
in what is expected to be an intriguing
Inter-League Challenge meeting. The
20-year-old, who was the Wildcats' leading
points scorer in 2007, has been snapped
up from Premier League outfit Mildenhall
as promoter Phil Bartlett looks to strengthen
his side in preparation for the run
in to the end of the season and the
Conference League play-offs.

Wildcats Step Up For Islanders Challenge
- 05/09/08 |
|
by
Julie Martin - Weymouth Wildcats Speedway
This Saturday 6th September, start time
7.15pm, the Weymouth Doonan Wildcats
entertain Premier League side the Isle
of Wight Islanders in an Inter League
Challenge at the Wessex Stadium. Last
year a competitive meeting between the
two teams was cut short by rain and
the prospects for another night of thrilling
racing once again looks in store for
Weymouth fans. The Islanders field a
strong side with club captain Jason
Bunyan lining up at number one. Wildcats
Andrew Bargh will ride for the Premier
League team alongside teenage Aussie
hot shot – Richard Sweetman, whist Lee
Smart makes his 2008 debut for the Wildcats.

Smart Returns To Boost Wildcats' Title
Hopes - 04/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Weymouth Doonan Wildcats promoter Phil
Bartlett has signalled his intentions
by pulling off the deal of the season
which sees Lee Smart make an unexpected
return to the Wessex Stadium. The Wildcats
guaranteed a play-off berth in the Conference
League last Saturday with a 64-28 success
over the Buxton Hitmen and now they
are going all out to claim the title.

Smart Move For Cats - 02/09/08 |
|
by
Julie Martin - Weymouth Wildcats Speedway
The Weymouth Doonan Wildcats propelled
themselves into second place in the
Conference League table this weekend
with a resounding victory over a depleted
Buxton Hitmen team at the Wessex Stadium.
Luke Priest wracked up a fifteen point
maximum and Karl Mason was also unbeaten
by an opponent. Kyle Newman was well
on to his way to a full house but suffered
the frustration of a broken primary
chain on the start line in heat 12 putting
paid to his chances of a second successive
maximum points haul.

Priest Leaves Hitmen On Wing And A Prayer
- 01/09/08 |
|
by
Adam Summers - Dorset Echo
Wildcats' comeback king Luke Priest
recorded his first full maximum since
returning from the brink of retirement,
as Weymouth annihilated Buxton 64-28.
It is a miracle the former Stoke star
can still ride a motorbike, after he
was involved in an horrific smash at
Loomer Road in July 2006. Priest was
sidelined for 18 months with a broken
pelvis, elbow and ankle, a ripped rectum
and a damaged bladder. But the 23-year-old
is making great strides in his recovery
and his full house at the Wessex Stadium
was his latest milestone on the long
road back to Premier League racing.
